Description

Eugenia uniflora – Surinam Cherry

Surinam Cherry is an attractive, easy-to-grow fruiting shrub or small tree that is well suited to warm climates. It produces small, ribbed fruits that change from green to orange, red or deep purple as they ripen.

The fruits are juicy and aromatic, with a unique sweet-tart flavour. They can be eaten fresh or used to make jams, jellies and other homemade treats.

The plant also makes a beautiful garden shrub, with glossy green leaves, small white flowers and colourful fruit. It can be pruned and shaped, making it suitable for hedges, borders or as a feature plant.

Growing and Care Instructions

Sun: Plant in full sun for the best growth, flowering and fruit production. It can tolerate some light shade.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water remains standing.
Water: Water regularly while the plant is becoming established. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant, but regular watering during dry periods will encourage better growth and fruiting.
Feeding: Add compost or well-rotted manure around the plant. A balanced fertiliser can be applied when needed during the growing season.
Pruning: Prune lightly to maintain the desired shape and size. Regular pruning can also encourage bushier growth.
Spacing: Allow enough room for the plant to develop into a bush or small tree.
Fruit: Fruits ripen progressively and can be picked when they have reached their mature colour and are soft enough to eat.
Climate: Best suited to warm, frost-free areas.

At Palm Farm, our plants are grown locally in Zambia and selected for healthy growth and good performance in our climate.
