Description
Citrus Tangelo ‘Minneola’
A deliciously sweet and juicy citrus fruit with a distinctive bell-shaped neck!
Minneola Tangelo is a popular citrus hybrid, a cross between a Duncan grapefruit and a Dancy mandarin. It produces beautiful, deep-orange fruits with a distinctive neck, thin easy-to-peel skin and exceptionally juicy flesh. The flavour is wonderfully refreshing, combining the sweetness of a mandarin with a pleasant tangy citrus taste.
Minneola is an excellent choice for home gardens and commercial orchards. The trees are attractive, evergreen, productive and provide delicious fresh fruit for eating, juicing and preserving.
Growing Conditions
- Climate: Prefers warm, subtropical to tropical climates. Performs best in areas with plenty of sunshine and moderate temperatures.
- Sunlight: Plant in full sun, ideally receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Soil: Requires well-drained, fertile soil. Avoid waterlogged areas, as citrus roots are sensitive to excessive moisture.
- Spacing: Allow approximately 4–5 metres between trees, depending on soil fertility and your intended orchard management system.
Planting Instructions
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the nursery container. Carefully remove the plant without disturbing the roots too much. Position the tree so that the graft union remains well above soil level. Backfill with good topsoil mixed with mature compost and water thoroughly.
Mulch around the tree to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk.
Watering
Water regularly during establishment, particularly during hot and dry weather. Mature trees need consistent moisture, especially during flowering, fruit development and hot weather. Deep watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering. Reduce watering during cooler periods, but never allow the root zone to dry out completely.
Feeding and Fertilising
Feed with a balanced citrus fertiliser containing nitrogen and essential micronutrients such as magnesium, zinc and iron. Apply fertiliser in several smaller applications throughout the growing season rather than one heavy application. Mature compost can also be added around the root zone to improve soil health.
Pruning and Maintenance
Minneola requires relatively little pruning. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches and any shoots growing from below the graft union. Maintain an open canopy to encourage good airflow and sunlight penetration.
Monitor regularly for common citrus pests such as aphids, scale insects, citrus leaf miners and mealybugs.
Flowering and Harvesting
Minneola produces fragrant white flowers, followed by attractive orange fruits. Fruit generally takes around 7–9 months to mature after flowering, depending on growing conditions and climate. Harvest when the fruits have developed their characteristic deep-orange colour and a good balance of sweetness and acidity.
Important pollination note: Minneola can produce fruit on its own, but fruit set and yields are often improved by cross-pollination. Planting a compatible citrus variety nearby, such as a suitable mandarin or sweet orange, can improve production.
A Wonderful Addition to Your Garden
With its beautiful evergreen foliage, fragrant blossoms and exceptionally juicy fruit, Minneola Tangelo is a rewarding citrus tree for both home gardeners and commercial growers. Give it sunshine, good drainage and regular feeding, and enjoy your own homegrown citrus harvest!
