Fig ‘Noire de Caromb’ is a very popular, high-yielding cultivar from France, producing medium-sized, dark purple-black fruits with deep red flesh. The fruit is exceptionally sweet, juicy, firm when ripe, and has an excellent flavour. The tree has a robust and vigorous growth habit but responds very well to pruning, making it easy to maintain at a smaller, more manageable size. When grown in a container, it will remain significantly smaller. Recommended tree spacing for Fig ‘Noir de Caromb’ in Zambia is 4m apart in rows and 6m between rows (400 plants per hectare).

Fig 'Noir de Caromb'
Fig 'Noir de Caromb' is a premium French variety valued for its dependable crops and outstanding fruit quality. It produces medium-sized figs with almost black skin and vibrant crimson-red flesh. The fruit is rich, sweet, and aromatic, with a smooth texture that makes it ideal for eating fresh, while also being excellent for preserves, baking, and drying.
This vigorous deciduous tree is well suited to warm climates and is relatively drought tolerant once established. It begins producing fruit at a young age and can provide generous harvests year after year with minimal maintenance. Its attractive lobed foliage also makes it an ornamental addition to any garden.
Growing Instructions
Plant in a position that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Figs perform best in fertile, well-drained soil but will adapt to a wide range of soil types provided they do not remain waterlogged. Water regularly during the first year to help establish a strong root system. Once established, water deeply during prolonged dry periods, especially while the fruit is developing.
Apply compost or a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and good fruit production. Mulching around the base of the tree helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep the mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk.
Prune during winter dormancy to remove dead or overcrowded branches and to maintain the desired shape and size. Fig trees fruit well on new growth, so annual pruning can help improve air circulation and make harvesting easier.
