Avocado ‘Gwen’
Avocado ‘Gwen’ is a high-yielding, compact, Type-A cultivar often chosen for small backyards due to its dwarf-like growth and heavy production. It is a descendant of the Hass, featuring thick, green, pebbly skin that stays green when ripe, with creamy, rich, nutty flesh. Gwen Avocado is considered one of the most consistent and reliable producers because, unlike Hass and many other varieties, it does not suffer from severe alternate bearing.

The Gwen Avocado is a premium avocado variety loved for its rich, creamy flesh, excellent flavour, and heavy bearing habit. It produces medium to large, oval-shaped green fruits with pebbly skin and a small seed, giving you more buttery edible flesh per fruit. Gwen avocados are known for their superior taste, high oil content, and compact tree growth, making them ideal for both home gardens and small orchards.
This variety is a reliable producer and matures slightly later than many common avocado types, extending your harvest season. The tree has a neat, dense canopy and can be managed well in medium-sized spaces.

Growing & Care Instructions
Climate
Gwen Avocado thrives best in warm frost-free to light frost subtropical climates. It enjoys full sun and performs very well in many parts of Zambia when protected from severe winter cold during its young stage.
Sunlight
Plant in a position receiving full sun for at least 6–8 hours daily for best flowering and fruit production.
Soil
Avocados prefer:
* Deep
* Well-drained
* Fertile soil rich in organic matter
Avoid heavy waterlogged soils, as avocado roots are sensitive to standing water.
Watering
* Water deeply 2–3 times per week while young.
* Once established, water regularly especially during hot dry months.
* Reduce watering in cool seasons.
* Keep soil moist but never soggy.
Feeding
Feed every 6–8 weeks during the growing season with:
* compost/manure
* balanced fruit tree fertilizer
* mulch around the root zone
Avocados respond very well to regular organic feeding.
Mulching
Apply a thick mulch layer around the tree to:
* retain moisture
* suppress weeds
* keep roots cool
Keep mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk.
Pruning
Light pruning can be done after harvesting to:
* shape the tree
* control height
* improve air circulation
Its naturally compact habit makes it easier to maintain than many avocado varieties.
Fruiting
Gwen Avocado generally starts producing in 3–4 years under good growing conditions. Mature trees are heavy bearers and reward growers with excellent quality fruit.
Pollination
Although Gwen can produce fruit on its own, planting near another avocado variety can improve pollination and increase yields.
Mature Tree Size
Approximately 4–6 meters tall, but can be kept smaller with pruning.
