Ochroma pyramidale – Balsa Tree

The Balsa Tree (Ochroma pyramidale) is one of the fastest-growing trees in the world and can develop into a large, attractive tree with a broad crown and very large, soft leaves. It is an excellent choice when you want a tree that establishes quickly and provides plenty of leafy green material.

Balsa is particularly well known for its extremely light, soft timber. The wood is widely used for model-making, toys, crafts, hobby projects and packaging materials. The large leaves also make it useful around the garden or farm as they provide a generous supply of organic green manure when they fall and decompose.

Growing and Care

Light: Plant in full sun for the fastest growth. Choose an open position where the tree will have plenty of space to develop.

Water: Young trees need regular watering, especially during their first few years while they are establishing. Keep the soil reasonably moist but avoid permanently waterlogged conditions. Once well established, the tree is more tolerant of periods of reduced rainfall.

Soil: Balsa grows best in deep, fertile, well-drained soil with good moisture availability. Adding compost or well-rotted manure when planting will help young trees establish strongly.

Growth: Balsa is exceptionally fast-growing under warm conditions with adequate water. Give it plenty of room, as it can eventually become a large tree.

Maintenance: The large leaves naturally fall and break down quickly, returning organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Fallen leaves can be left beneath the tree as mulch or collected and added to compost.

Planting position: Because of its eventual size and rapid growth, plant balsa well away from buildings, power lines and other trees. It is best suited to larger gardens, farms and open spaces.

In Zambia: Balsa is particularly suited to warm areas where it can receive plenty of sunshine and sufficient water during establishment. Growth will be fastest where young trees are watered regularly.

A beautiful, useful and exceptionally fast-growing tree – ideal for gardeners, farmers and anyone interested in producing their own lightweight timber while also benefiting from its abundant leafy biomass.

Growing Balsa for Money

Balsa can be grown as a fast-growing plantation crop. For commercial timber production, plant trees at about 3 × 3 m spacing (approximately 1,110 trees per hectare) to encourage rapid, straight growth while allowing enough room for the trees to develop. With good soil, adequate moisture and regular management, balsa can produce valuable lightweight timber in 7 to 9 years. As the plantation develops, proper weed control, pruning and thinning can help produce straight, high-quality trunks suitable for crafts, model making, packaging, insulation and other lightweight timber products.
