Dietes grandiflora (Fairy Iris)

Dietes grandiflora, commonly known as Fairy Iris, Large Wild Iris, or African Iris, is a hardy, evergreen, clump-forming perennial prized for its elegant sword-shaped foliage and beautiful white flowers marked with yellow and violet-blue. Native to southern Africa, it is exceptionally well suited to Zambia's climate and is widely used in gardens, commercial landscapes, and along driveways and walkways.

Fairy Iris flowers repeatedly throughout the warmer months, producing delicate blooms that last only a day, but are quickly replaced by new flowers, creating a long-lasting display. Its graceful, arching leaves provide year-round structure and attractive greenery even when the plant is not in bloom.

This low-maintenance plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to a wide range of soil types, provided they are well drained. Once established, it is drought tolerant, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens. It is also suitable for planting around ponds, in borders, mass plantings, and large containers.

Dietes grandiflora is easy to grow and requires very little care beyond occasional watering during prolonged dry periods and the removal of old flower stems. Clumps can be divided every few years to create new plants or rejuvenate older specimens.
