Beaucarnea recurvata (Ponytail Palm) is a unique and eye-catching plant known for its swollen, bottle-shaped trunk and long, cascading leaves that form a graceful ponytail-like canopy. Despite its palm-like appearance, it is actually a highly drought-tolerant succulent, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for gardens, patios, containers, and indoor spaces. Its sculptural form adds a modern tropical touch and makes it a beautiful feature plant.
Growing conditions: Plant in full sun to bright light in well-drained soil. Allow the soil to dry between watering, as the enlarged trunk stores water and helps the plant survive dry conditions. Avoid overwatering, especially in heavy soils, as this can lead to root problems. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy growth. It can be grown outdoors in warm climates or as a container plant where temperatures are cooler.
Growth rate: Slow growing.
Mature height: 3–6 m outdoors (can remain much smaller in containers).
