Aechmea gamosepala (Matchstick Bromeliad)
The Matchstick Bromeliad is an easy-to-grow tropical plant. It gets its name from its vibrant pink flower spikes with purple tips that look exactly like coloured matchsticks. Grows best in bright, indirect sunlight or light shade. Excellent cut flower, blooms repeatedly throughout the year. The more you harvest the flowers, the more blooms the plant produces.

Aechmea gamosepala (Matchstick Bromeliad) is a striking, easy-care bromeliad admired for its long-lasting flower spikes topped with bright purple-blue blooms that emerge from vivid pink bracts, resembling colourful matchsticks. Its graceful rosette of glossy green, arching leaves adds year-round texture and tropical appeal to gardens, patios, and indoor spaces.
This hardy bromeliad thrives in bright, filtered light or partial shade and performs well in pots, hanging baskets, or planted beneath trees in frost-free gardens. It prefers a well-drained growing medium and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings while keeping a small amount of fresh water in the central cup. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance.
Growing to approximately 40–60 cm tall and wide, the Matchstick Bromeliad produces offsets around the base after flowering, making it easy to propagate and gradually form an attractive clump. Its vibrant colour, long flowering season, and low-maintenance nature make it an excellent choice for adding a tropical touch to any garden or home.
